When our client purchased their home in the Fox Mill Subdivision of St. Charles, they envisioned a warm and welcoming family space that would suit their growing needs. The main Family Room, a central hub for family gatherings, needed a thoughtful update. In this blog, we’ll take you through the transformation journey, highlighting our design choices that maximized seating and embraced boldness while maintaining a neutral palette.
Assessing the Space: The Before
Upon our initial visit, we were impressed by the good bones of the Family Room. With ample space and plenty of light, it had great potential. However, the existing furniture and color scheme required a fresh touch. Here are some key aspects we needed to address:
- Outdated Colors: The walls and furniture were in need of a modern update.
- Bulky Entertainment Unit: The existing setup took up too much space and didn’t complement the room’s flow.
- Seating Capacity: With a growing family, maximizing seating was a priority.
Making a Statement: The Fireplace
One of the most critical elements of the Family Room was the fireplace. Our client initially favored a classic white paint color, believing it would be the perfect choice for a subtle look. However, upon considering the fireplace’s prominence in the room, we proposed a bold dark option.
Providing examples of both finishes, we worked collaboratively with the client to illustrate how a darker color could create a striking contrast against the lighter walls. Ultimately, they agreed to go dark, allowing this key feature to truly shine as a focal point in the room.
Sleek and Stylish: Custom Built-In Cabinetry
As we began to redesign the space, we knew the existing bulky entertainment unit had to go. Not only did it take up a lot of space, but it also clashed with our vision for a sleek, modern family room. We designed custom built-in cabinetry that provides ample storage while keeping the room looking open and airy. Complemented by floating shelves, this feature not only maintains organization but also allows for personal décor to shine.
Final Touches: Color and Decor
To enhance the overall design, we carefully selected textiles and decor that introduced patterns and textures without overwhelming the space. Our focus remained on preserving a fairly neutral color palette while incorporating bold accessories, creating a sense of warmth and personality.
Conclusion
The transformation of this Family Room in the Fox Mill Subdivision turned out to be an exciting project that beautifully blends functionality and style. By maximizing seating, utilizing custom cabinetry, and making a bold statement with the fireplace, we created a space that not only meets the family’s needs but also reflects their personality.
